Serve up these cute and easy heart apples for a fun healthy Valentines snack, lunch box food or healthy heart themed party food idea for kids!
Valentine's Day is fast approaching, and I've got quite a few fun Valentine's themed recipes and tutorials to share with you this year, so expect plenty of love and hearts here on the blog over the next week.
Today's Valentine's themed food is this super simple (but very cute!) heart apple tutorial. Fun food doesn't come much easier than this, and it's a great way to entice kids to eat more fruit!
These easy heart apples are perfect for popping in a lunch box or serving up as a fun snack. They're so quick and easy to create, they'd make great party food too.
You could switch out the hearts for any other simple shape to match your party theme as well - stars, flowers, crowns, animals... there are loads of different shapes that you could use! Check out the Mini Bento Cutters section in the Eats Amazing Shop where there's a great selection of small cutters to choose from.
If you don't have any cutters to hand, you could also cut out the heart shapes freehand using a small sharp knife. I'd recommend making a paper template to cut around if you're doing this so that the hearts are the same shape and size for swapping!
Easy Heart Apples
Ingredients:
- 1 red or pink apple
- 1 green apple
- lemon juice (optional)
Method:
Wash and shine the apples.
Push a heart shaped mini cutter into the side of one of the apples, making it sure that every part of the cutter cuts the skin. Carefully remove the cutter, leaving the skin in place.
Run the tip of a small sharp knife under the heart shaped piece of apple skin and carefully remove in one piece.
Brush the cut surface of the apple with lemon juice to prevent browning, then brush back of the heart shaped piece of apple skin as well and place to one side.
Repeat with the second apple.
Place the green heart onto the pink apple, and pink heart onto the green apple, over the heart shaped holes left from removing the skin. You may need to shave a little of the apple flesh from the back of the heart or the cut side of the apple to make it fit snugly. Make sure you brush with lemon juice again if you make any extra cuts.
Serve immediately as a fun Valentine's Day snack, pack in a lunch box or pop into the fruit bowl for a cute Valentine's surprise!
Notes: Depending on the type of apple, you may not need to brush with lemon juice if serving immediately, but it will help prevent browning if they will be packed in a lunch box or left out on a party table for a while.
If your children dislike the lemon taste, you can use orange juice instead.
