These cute and easy shortbread butterflies are perfect for butterfly themed party food, an ugly bug ball party or summer garden party
These shortbread butterfly cookies are really quick and easy to make, so they're perfect for fun party food treats or a cute tea party dessert for kids. Whatever your party theme, kids are sure to love these cute edible butterflies!
When preparing party food, especially for a large crowd, there's rarely time for long and complicated recipes, so these pretty butterfly biscuits, which are made from mostly ready-made ingredients, are ideal for a special dessert that takes very little time to throw together.
Apart from whipping up some simple buttercream icing (and you can even buy that ready-made if you're really pushed for time!), it's really just a matter of assembling ingredients to create these cute butterfly treats.
I used plain white buttercream, just as it comes, for creating my butterfly cookies but if you have a little more time you could divide the icing up and colour it before piping for a selection of different coloured butterflies. I think pastel colours would be really pretty, and you could even match them up to your party colour scheme if you have one!
Easy Shortbread Butterfly Cookies
Ingredients:
- 100g butter
- 200g icing sugar
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
- 10 shortbread fingers
- 20 pretzels
- 5 mikado sticks (or matchstick chocolates)
- 1 Tbsp hundreds and thousands sprinkles
Method:
First make the buttercream icing. Whisk the butter until soft and fluffy. Sift the icing sugar into the bowl with the butter, a little at a time, whisking as you go until completely combined. Add the vanilla extract and whisk again until combined.
Spoon the buttercream icing into a piping bag with a large closed star piping tip.
Pipe a line of icing stars down the centre of each shortbread finger.
Push two pretzels into the icing on each biscuit to form butterfly wings.
Break short lengths off of the mikado sticks and push two pieces into each biscuit for antennae.
Finish each butterfly with a pinch of sprinkles scattered over the top.
Serve and enjoy!
Notes: Try colouring the buttercream in different pastel colours before piping for colourful butterflies!
If not serving straight away, the finished butterfly cookies can be stored in the fridge for a couple of hours before serving if needed.
