This fun and easy pepper octopus vegetable platter makes perfect healthy party food for an ocean, beach or pirate themed party!
It's a brand new year and I'm looking forward to plenty of creativity in the kitchen over the year to come! First though, I've got some fun ocean themed food ideas to share with you from a pirate party that I threw for my younger son, who turned 6 a few months ago.
For today's fun Pirate themed food I'm sharing a fun and easy Pepper Octopus vegetable platter - it takes just minutes to put together and is such an easy way to jazz up a simple plate of vegetable sticks!
I like to keep things simple when it comes to party food - my boys will tell you that it isn't a party without sandwiches and crisps so that's where I always start. I always try to offer healthy options as well though, and it can be surprising how many children are very happy to add a handful of crunchy veggies to their party plate!
This pepper octopus is really easy to create and is perfect for pirate party food, a beach themed party or ocean themed party food.
Octopus Themed Veggie Platter
Ingredients:
- 1 yellow pepper
- 2 medium carrots
- 1 cucumber
- 1 300g punnet baby plum tomatoes
- 1 300g tub hummus
- 1 orange pepper
Equipment:
- googly eye bento picks
- large plate or platter (I bought mine from Poundland)
- small shallow bowl
Method:
First prepare the vegetables. De-seed and slice the yellow pepper into strips, peel and cut the carrot into sticks, wash and cut the cucumber into sticks, wash and halve the tomatoes lengthways.
Tip the hummus into a small shallow bowl.
Cut the top off the orange pepper. Carefully pull out the seeds, keeping the outside of the pepper intact.
Cut three thin rings from the top of pepper, then cut each ring into three for the legs.
Turn the remaining piece of pepper upside down and add 2 googly eye picks.
Place the pepper cut-side down in the bowl of hummus to form the octopus body.
Add 8 pepper legs, pushing them into the hummus around the pepper body.
Arrange the prepared vegetable sticks on a platter.
Place the bowl of hummus, complete with pepper octopus, in the middle.
Serve immediately.
Note: Get ahead by prepping the vegetable sticks advance and storing them in the fridge until ready to serve.
