These fun homemade Halloween sprinkles are SO easy to make! Use them for Halloween baking, party food and spooky fun food for kids.
Looking for a new way to jazz up your Halloween food this year? How about making yourself a set of Halloween themed coconut sprinkles - you won't believe how easy they are!
Last year I shared my recipe for easy homemade coconut sprinkles here on the blog, including a whole range of colour ideas for different themed sprinkle mixes.
In the run up to Halloween this month, inspiration struck along similar lines, so I created this set of Halloween sprinkles to use in some of this years fun Halloween food and recipes.
I used traditional Halloween colours of black, orange, green and purple for my Halloween sprinkles, and have had a lot of fun using them to create some brand new spooky recipes for the kids this Halloween!
Be sure to check out my recipe video so you can see just how easy these sprinkles are to make!
It might sound time consuming to make your own sprinkles, but although you need to plan ahead when making these (as they will need to dry out overnight before using), they literally take 10 minutes at the most to prepare.
Homemade Halloween Coconut Sprinkles
Ingredients:
- 300g desiccated coconut
- black, green, yellow, red and blue food colourings
Method:
Line 4 small oven trays with baking paper.
Measure out your coconut, then divide it between 4 small china or glass bowls.
Add a small amount of food colouring to each bowl of coconut - black, green, a mixture of yellow and red for orange, and a mixture of red and blue for purple.
If you’re using gel or powdered food colourings, you’ll also need to add a splash of water to each bowl to help the colouring coat the coconut properly. Try adding one teaspoon of water, then add another if you’re still struggling to blend the colour.
Stir well with a small spoon until the colours are completely mixed in.
Once the coconut has all been coloured, tip each colour of coconut onto a lined baking tray and spread out into a single layer.
Leave the trays out somewhere cool and dry, at a minimum overnight or for up to 24 hours until the coconut has completely dried. You may need to give them a little stir once or twice to ensure that all of the coconut gets a chance to dry out properly.
Once the coconut sprinkles are dry, tip them into airtight containers or jars to store until ready to use. Make sure they are completely dry if you want them to last – you can leave the lid off for a few more hours if you don’t feel that they are quite ready when you decant them.
As long as they are completely dry and stored in an air-tight container, the sprinkles should last until the use-by date on the coconut packaging, as they are just dried coconut and colouring.
Note: If you are in a hurry it is possible to speed up drying the coconut sprinkles by baking gently in the oven. The oven will need to be on a very low heat (no more than 120°C (Gas mark ½ / 250°F), and you’ll need to keep a sharp eye on them as once they are dry they can quickly burn.
Depending on how wet they are, they should dry out in around 10 minutes, and if they are particularly wet from the colouring, you may need to give them a stir half way through.
