These easy homemade sprinkles take just 5 minutes to prepare and are perfect for cake decorating & other fun food projects!
Back in the summer I shared my recipe for easy homemade coconut rainbow sprinkles with you, which I've had a lot of fun with since!
I've recently been planning out some new projects using these pretty homemade coconut sprinkles and decided to try out some new colour mixes, some of which I'm sharing with you today.
Be sure to check out my recipe video so you can see just how easy these are to make!
I created a lovely princess mix, ocean mix, yellow sandy beach mix and of course classic green coconut grass, and I can't wait to use them all in my upcoming fun food projects!
These sprinkles are perfect for cake decorating and other baking projects, sprinkling over ice cream and yogurt, making healthier fairy bread, coating energy balls and countless other fun food projects.
It might sound time consuming to make your own sprinkles, but although you need to plan ahead when making these (as they will need to dry out overnight before using), they literally take 5 minutes at the most to prepare.
They're perfect for adding extra fun to themed party food, as you can make a sprinkle mix coloured to match whatever theme you need!
I've shared my simple recipe for the coconut sprinkles below, and you'll also find the specific colour ratios I used to make the different sprinkle mixes below the basic recipe.
Easy Homemade Coconut Sprinkles
Ingredients:
- 80g desiccated coconut
- food colourings in colours of your choice
Method:
Line an oven tray with baking paper.
Measure out your coconut, then divide it between small china or glass bowls in as many colours as you would like to use.
Add a small amount of food colouring to each bowl of coconut. Stir well with a small spoon until the colour is completely mixed in.
Note: If you’re using gel or powdered food colourings, you’ll need to add a splash of water to each bowl to help the colouring coat the coconut. Try adding one teaspoon of water, then add another if you’re still struggling to blend the colour.
Once the coconut has all been coloured, tip it onto the lined baking tray and spread out into an even layer. If using multiple colours, try to keep them fairy separate whilst they are still wet to avoid mixing and blurring the colours.
Leave the tray out somewhere cool and dry, at a minimum overnight or for up to 24 hours until the coconut has completely dried. You may need to give it a little stir once or twice to ensure that all of the coconut gets a chance to dry out properly.
Once the coconut is dry, mix the colours together on the tray, then tip them into an airtight container or jar to store until ready to use. Make sure they are completely dry if you want them to last – you can leave the lid off for a few more hours if you don't feel that they are quite ready when you decant them.
As long as they are completely dry and stored in an air-tight container, the sprinkles should last until the use-by date on the coconut packaging, as they are just dried coconut and colouring.
Note: If you are in a rush it is possible to speed up drying the coconut sprinkles by baking gently in the oven. The oven will need to be on a very low heat (no more than 120°C (Gas mark ½ / 250°F), and you'll need to keep a sharp eye on them as once they are dry they can quickly burn. Depending on how wet they are, they should dry out in around 10 minutes, and if they are particularly wet from the colouring, you may need to give them a stir half way through.
DIY Coloured Sprinkle Mixes
Below I've detailed the ratios for the sprinkle mixes I created for the video above. You can create them exactly as shown or of course adapt them for your own projects. However you make them, I hope you have fun with them!
Princess Sprinkle Mix
Colour ratio:
- 25g purple coconut
- 25g pink coconut
- 25g plain white desiccated coconut
Notes:
If you don't have purple food colouring, mix red and blue colours until you have the desired shade.
If you're in a rush and need to bake these sprinkles to dry them out quickly (see recipe card note), don't add the white coconut to the mix until after the colours have been baked, as the white coconut will brown when toasted in the oven.
Ocean Sprinkle Mix
Colour ratio:
- 40g blue coconut
- 20g green coconut
- 20g plain white desiccated coconut
Notes:
Try mixing a little blue into your green food colouring for a more ocean-like shade of green.
If you're in a rush and need to bake these sprinkles to dry them out quickly (see recipe card note), don't add the white coconut to the mix until after the colours have been baked, as the white coconut will brown when toasted in the oven.
Sandy Beach Sprinkles Mix
Colour ratio:
- 40g yellow coconut
- 20g orange coconut
- 20g plain white desiccated coconut
Notes:
If you don't have orange food colouring, mix yellow and red colours until you have the desired shade.
If you're in a rush and need to bake these sprinkles to dry them out quickly (see recipe card note), don't add the white coconut to the mix until after the colours have been baked, as the white coconut will brown when toasted in the oven.
Green Grass Sprinkles
Colour Ratio:
- 80g green coconut
Notes:
For a more grass-like mix, try creating a few different shades of green before drying and mixing together the coconut. Add drops of blue or yellow to your mix for different shades of green.
