I am of the belief that that if you want to do one simple thing to make food fun and to make the recipient smile, that one thing is to add eyes. Eyes in unexpected places are funny, they just are! At this time of year eyes or eyeballs can also add a creepy element to Halloween food. Over the last few weeks I have posted several new edible eyeball ideas here on the Eats Amazing blog - as I said before, I started brainstorming and couldn't stop! In today's post I'm going to gather them all up in one place, and add a few final eye themed food ideas for good measure.
1. Eyeball Sandwich Balls - Children love a bit of gory fun, and you can't get much more gory than eyeballs for lunch! Make up a bigger batch for a fun new way of presenting sandwiches for Halloween party food, or just serve some up as snack. For full details and a tutorial see my original blog post here.
2. Rice (Eye)balls - Shaped rice is a staple food in traditional Japanese bento boxes, and a simple ball of rice is one of the easiest shapes to achieve, with no special equipment needed. Simply place a spoonful of sticky rice in the centre of a piece of clingfilm, gather up all the edges and twist until the clingfilm is tight and the rice has formed into a firm ball. (This is a very similar technique to the one used for sandwich balls, see this blog post for my sandwich ball tutorial). To turn your rice ball into an eyeball, cut a disk from cheese, colour with food colouring and draw on a pupil using black food colouring or an edible marker pen. For the eyeball themed snack below, I served my rice eyeballs up in mini silicone cups to make them slightly easier to eat. I had used leftover basmati rice rather than sticky rice so they were a little crumbly!
3. Eyeball Quesadilla - Quesadillas are really easy to make and a great way of using up scraps of food left over from making bento lunches. I made this one for last Halloween, turning it into an eyeball by cutting it into a circle, adding a carrot disk dotted with a black edible marker pen and drawing on the 'veins' with a red edible marker pen. For full details see the original blog post here.
4. Mozzarella Pearl Eyeballs - Mozzarella pearls are available in most large supermarkets, and their ready-made ball shape makes them the perfect instant edible eyeball! Dot with edible marker or add a tiny circle of cucumber skin to turn them into eyeballs. Add to savoury dishes such as soup or pasta or serve up in a bowl along with cherry tomatoes to make an instant and gory caprese salad for a Halloween party. For details of my eyeball soup below see the original blog post here, and for the eyeball pasta see my original blog post here.
5. Icing Eyes - I had trouble finding these here in the UK, but I finally got around to making my own recently, and it was far easier than I expected! For my easy DIY icing eyes tutorial, see the original blog post here. I have since found them to buy on Amazon UK, but I have found that it is far cheaper to make them yourself! Use to decorate sandwiches, yoghurt and pretty much any food you can think of, as well as cakes and biscuits.
6. Mini Marshmallow Eyes - I was really pleased to discover recently that mini marshmallows make great instant edible eyes! Simply cut them in half, dot them with an edible marker pen and stick them onto whatever food you want to decorate - with the right foods (such as fruit) they are even self-adhesive! For full details see my original blog post here.
7. Babybel Eyes - I often use mini Babybel cheeses to add fun eyes to creative sandwiches. To make, simply cut the cheese in half, leaving the wax intact, and top with blueberries or raisins. For details of the sandwiches below, see the original blog posts here; monster sandwich, owl sandwich, funny faced bagel.
8. Cheddar Cheese Eyes - One of the most simple ways to add edible eyes to a sandwich or other savoury food is to cut ovals or circles from cheddar cheese (or other hard cheese) using mini bento cutters and dot them with food colouring or an edible marker pen. For full details of the spider bread roll below see the original blog post here.
9. Marshmallow Eyeballs - These eyeballs are a fun treat to make with children and would be great for a Halloween party! For full details and my recipe see the original blog post here.
10. Frozen Yoghurt Eyeballs - Halloween desserts don't have to be full of sugar - these gory edible eyeballs are made from frozen natural yoghurt and raisins. For full details and my tutorial see the original blog post here.
11. Jelly (Jello) Eyes - Serve up creepy jelly eyeballs by themselves or use to bring a gory twist to bowls of yoghurt or ice-cream. For full details and my tutorial see the original blog post here.
12. Sweet (Candy) Eyes - At this time of year it's easy to find fun eyeball shaped sweets - I found the jelly eyes below in our pound shop, and I've also seen lots of chocolate eyeballs around. With a bit of imagination you can find eyes in other sweets too, from fried eggs, dolly mixtures and smarties to chocolate buttons and flying saucers - anything round would work!
I hope this post has managed to provide plenty of inspiration for making fun and creative food which looks at you! Here's a bonus idea - if you want a minimal effort way of adding eyes to food that you can use over and over again, then you may be pleased to hear that my love of adding eyes to food spills over into the Eats Amazing Shop too - with my all time favourite food picks being the hilarious eye picks I used to create the macaroni mozzarella monsters below!
If you click on the pictures below you can find these brilliant eye picks and eyeball cupcake rings in the Eats Amazing Shop!
