This 'cheats recipe' for cute ladybug macarons makes a quick and easy party treat or a really fun edible craft project for kids!
My six year old absolutely loved bugs of every type, and thanks to the amazing weather we've had, has spent a good proportion of the last few months hunting for them in our garden. I sense a possible career in entomology in his future!
Whilst his absolute favourite bug at the moment is a woodlouse, ladybugs (or ladybirds as we call them here in the UK) come a very close second, so this fun food tutorial for ladybug macarons was a big hit with him!
Before you run scared at the idea of making macarons from scratch, fear not, this is a complete cheats ‘recipe’ – we simply decorated ready-made macarons from the supermarket to make a super fun treat in just a few minutes!
If you are a better baker than I, you can of course make your own macarons – you’ll find links to several great recipes further down this post. When time is short though (and let’s face it, when you've got kids to entertain, time is ALWAYS short!), there’s nothing wrong with making life easier for yourself with a quick shortcut like this.
Cute and Easy Ladybug Macarons
Ingredients (makes 6):
- 6 macarons in colours of your choice
- 1 black edible marker pen
- small tube of writing icing
- 12 edible candy eyeballs
Method:
Using a black edible marker pen, draw and colour in a semi-circle for the head on the top of one of the macarons. Be careful to draw and colour lightly so that you don’t go through the delicate macaron crust.
Next, draw a line down from the head, curved out on both sides for the wings. Carefully colour in as before.
Decorate the wings of your ladybug with a symmetrical pattern of black dots.
Using the writing icing as ‘glue’, stick on two edible candy eyes.
Repeat with the remaining macarons, then place them all on a plate or platter to serve.
Enjoy!
