    Healthy Homemade Granola Recipe

Today's post is part of my series of easy recipes for kids, and I'm sharing a simple and healthy homemade granola recipe, which is really easy to make, free from refined sugar and nut free too.

Since I work so hard to feed my family healthy meals at lunch and dinner time, I've recently been trying to improve our choice of breakfast foods too.  It's so easy to fall back on sugary cereal during the week, especially as I am not a morning person and don't function well until breakfast is already inside me!  I found this simple granola recipe on the BBC Good Food website and thought it would be an easy one to adapt for Small Child to make.  I was also pleased to discover that I already had all the ingredients needed, as it's a simple storecupboard recipe.

    Cooking with Small Child Button

I've once again attached a free printable copy of the recipe at the end of this post for you to print out if you would like to try challenging your own ‘Small Child’ to give it a go.  I've also outlined the recipe below, feel free to adapt it to suit your needs; for example I chose the dried fruits based on what I had in the cupboard at the time, but you could substitute them with any dried fruit of your choice, and add extras such as seeds or nuts if wanted.

    Ingredients

    • 200g Oats
    • 2 tbs Honey
    • 1 tbs Vegetable Oil
    • 50g Raisins
    • 50g Dried Cranberries
    • 50g Dried Apricots

    Method

Heat the oven to 200°C (Gas mark 6/400°F).  Measure out the oats, honey and oil and mix together in a large bowl.

Cooking with Small Child - Simple Granola, Step 1

Tip the mixture into a roasting tin and spread out in one even layer.  Bake for 15 minutes, shaking half way through.  Take out of the oven and leave to cool.

Cooking with Small Child - Simple Granola, Step 2

Meanwhile, chop the apricots into small pieces and mix with the raisins and cranberries.  When the oats are cool, mix all the ingredients together.

Cooking with Small Child - Simple Granola, Step 3

Store in an airtight jar or container.

The above batch of granola that Small Child made didn't last long at all.  It got eaten in just a few days at breakfast time and made an appearance in a lunchbox as a topping for yoghurt too.  We'll be making a larger batch of it again very soon, after repeated requests for it from Small Child and Daddy!
