In my endless quest to keep the kids hydrated in the hot summer weather, I bring you a fun new fruit infused water to tempt them with! If the bright rainbow colours of the fruit don't tempt them to give it a try, call it rainbow unicorn water and they're sure to love it!
If like me you struggle to get your kids to drink enough water, presenting it in new ways can really help persuade them to drink more, especially if you can make it fun! The novelty value of a new cup or drinking bottle can help for a while (thank you Pound Shop!) and ice cubes always go down well, but I've also found that fruit infused waters have been a real hit with both of my boys - if I put fruit in it then they love to drink up all of their water and usually ask for more. An added bonus is that they can eat the fruit when they're finished with their water, so it doubles up as a healthy snack too!
I made this gorgeous rainbow fruit infused water with the leftovers from our rainbow fruity frozen yogurt bark, so if you want to give it a go, why not kill two birds with one stone and make a fun snack for the freezer at the same time! If the yogurt bark doesn't appeal, you'll find lots more rainbow recipes in my Rainbow Food section, including several lovely rainbow fruit recipes that would generate some great leftovers for creating rainbow water too.
Rainbow Fruit Infused Water
Ingredients (serves 2):
- 4 strawberries
- 10 raspberries
- handful blueberries
- ½ kiwi fruit
- ¼ fresh mango
Method:
Prepare the ingredients; wash, hull and chop the strawberries, wash the raspberries, wash and halve the blueberries, peel and chop the kiwi fruit, peel, stone and chop the mango.
Divide and drop the fruit into 2 small bottles or glasses, a few pieces at a time, layering by fruit colour. We started with strawberries, then raspberries, blueberries, kiwi and mango.
Fill the bottle to the top with cold tap water or chilled filtered water if you prefer. Add a straw if wanted and screw on the lid if you have one.
Leave to infuse for 10 minutes then serve and enjoy! Once the water has all been drunk, you can continue to fill and refill the fruit filled bottle all day long. I’d recommend filling it up and popping it in the fridge between drinks to keep the water chilled and the fruit fresh.
At the end of the day when you have finished with the water, tip out the fruit, drain in a colander then enjoy as an instant healthy snack or dessert!
Notes: I use some super cute mini milk bottles for our infused waters (similar ones can be found here on Amazon UK) but you can use any glass, bottles or flasks. I love the look of these plastic mason jar style ‘glasses’ for infused waters too and if your children are a little older, the glass versions are also very easy to find in the shops or online. I’ve found that clear vessels do seem to work best, if the kids can see the fruit, they tend to drink more - probably the novelty value but it works...!
