Last week I shared the first of several ideas for fruit infused water for kids - a delicious summer berry infused water recipe that is my 8 year old's favourite way to drink water at the moment. Today I have another child friendly fruit infused water recipe to share, this time it's my 2 year old's favourite one - a yummy citrus fruit infused water.
I love the fresh taste of citrus and both of my boys love citrus fruits too, I remember being amazed at how my oldest would happily eat lemon and lime wedges as a baby with barely a wince! The strong flavours work really well in infused water and there's an added bonus of some extra vitamin C too.
I kept the balance of fruit in this recipe weighted towards the orange flavour to balance out the sour flavours with a little extra sweetness. It went down very well with both boys and I loved it too, I've been making this recipe for myself all week!
Citrus Fruit Infused Water for Kids
Ingredients:
- ½ small orange
- 1 round slice lemon
- 1 round slice lime
Method:
Prepare the fruit: cut the orange into wedges, cut the lemon and lime rounds in half to make two semicircles of each.
Drop the fruit into the bottle or flask a few pieces at a time, alternating between fruits so that they are well mixed.
Fill the bottle to the top with cold tap water or chilled filtered water if you prefer. Add a straw if wanted and screw on the lid if you have one.
Leave to infuse for 10 minutes then serve and enjoy. Once the water has all been drunk, you can continue to fill and refill the fruit filled bottle all day long. I’d recommend filling it up and popping it in the fridge between drinks to keep the water chilled and the fruit fresh.
At the end of the day when you have finished with water, tip out the fruit, drain in a colander then munch up the fruit from the wedges - the kids will probably only enjoy the orange but it's worth giving the lemon and lime a go too, if only to see their faces!
Notes: Be sure to buy unwaxed fruits for this recipe.
I’ve been using some super cute mini milk bottles for our infused waters (similar ones can be found here on Amazon UK) but you can use any glass, bottles or flasks. I also found these plastic mason jar style ‘glasses’ which would be perfect for infused waters too – and the glass versions seem to be very easy to find in the shops at the moment if your children are a little older. I’ve found that clear vessels do seem to work best, if the boys can see the fruit, they tend to drink more, probably the novelty value but I’m a great believer in eating with your eyes and I think it’s the same for drinks.
As I mentioned above I shared a yummy summer berry fruit infused water recipe last week and plan to share more fruit infused water recipes for kids here on the blog in the next week or so, but if you’re looking for more ideas to keep the kids hydrated, you might also like my rainbow fruit ice cubes and rainbow fruit juice ice cubes, and you’ll find lots of smoothie recipes in the drinks section here on the blog too.

I will certainly make this at one point for my son, Bobble have a fantastic infused bottle as well! I will have to wait until he's 1 year as he cannot have citrus at the moment x

Sounds nice but I'm wondering if this taste would be strong enough for my young man as he loves sour, the sourer the better for him! We usually use the juice of half a lemon or lime per glass of water. No sweetness needed in this house! 😉

Impressive! You could of course squeeze in the juice if you like a stronger taste. I've found the hint of flavour and the novelty of the fruit in the water has been enough to tempt mine to drink more 🙂

Ooh I'd love this for when I'm teaching in summer

I love this idea! I don't really give the kids much juice, so this would be a real treat, they would love it!

This does look delicious and I will for sure give this a try. I just also wanted to note that the dentist in me is scared that people will drink this too often. It is a good treat once I. A while but drinking citrus water too often is incredibly damaging to your teeth.
Grace says
Thank you for the feedback Lance, I must admit that I hadn't considered the damaging effect of the citrus fruit on the teeth, I was assuming that as there is far less sugar in this it would be better than pure fruit juice or fizzy drinks for example, but of course there is nothing quite like pure water alone, if only my boys would happily drink a bit more of it!
