Serve a pretty side salad for lunch with this easy garden bento box salad - a great way to get kids eating their fruit and vegetables!

Publishing the first of my new lunchbox notes series earlier this week reminded me that it's been a while since I shared any bento boxes here on the blog. I found the previously unshared photos of this simple garden bento box salad for kids in my archives and thought you might like to see it, simple though it is!

How to make a simple garden themed bento box - this fun idea is a cute way to serve up fruit and veggies to kids

Whilst most of the lunches that I create are packed all in one box (the divided Yumbox being our favourite lunch box), sometimes I like to pack sandwiches or a wrap in a separate box and create a fun side salad in a bento box to go with them. This easy garden themed bento salad is a fun way to present fruits and vegetables on the side. It looks impressive, but it's actually really easy to achieve!

As well as packing for lunch, this pretty salad would be perfect for taking along to a picnic, or you could even serve it up in a bowl instead of a box as part of a summery afternoon tea or a fun and healthy after-school snack for kids.

    Simple Garden Bento Box Salad

    Ingredients:

    • 1 kiwi fruit
    • ⅓ large carrot
    • 5 sugar snap peas
    • 6 strawberries
    • handful blueberries

    Method:

Cut a zig-zag around a kiwi fruit with a sharp knife and carefully pull it apart into two halves to make flowers. Place in the bento box.

Cut the carrot into rounds, then cut the rounds into flower shapes with a mini bento cutter. Scatter the carrots around in the bento box, in between the kiwi 'flowers'.

Cut each of the sugar snap peas in half.

Fill the gaps with the strawberries, sugar snap pea halves and blueberries.

Serve with sandwiches or a filled wrap, and don’t forget to pack a little spoon for the kiwi!
