Wall's Pastry has recently launched its first range of microwave slices, which have been designed specifically to be heated in the microwave. I was asked to give them a try and today I'm sharing my thoughts on the new range.
The first two products available in the range are the Mexican Chicken Fajita Slice and a Chilli Beef Burrito Slice. Both slices are wrapped in Wall’s Pastry’s extra-tasty pastry.
The Mexican Chicken Fajita Slice is made with pieces of succulent chicken and mature cheddar cheese blended with mixed peppers, smoked paprika, cumin, chilli and a hint of garlic, and the Chilli Beef Burrito Slice is filled with tender beef and fresh red peppers with a blend of smoked paprika, chipotle and jalapeno spicing.
I love trying new food products so was really looking forward to trying the slices. I have to admit that I was a little unsure about heating them in the microwave, but I'll try anything once. Actually, as it happened, once became five times. The first time because it was my job to try them, the second, third, fourth and fifth times* just to check... because they really were that delicious!
*obviously not all on the same day!
Both slices have a lot of flavour. I particularly liked the Mexican Chicken Fajita slice, which has a gentle kick to it. It was a little too spicy for my boys, but they loved the Chilli Beef Burrito slices which have a milder flavour.
The pastry slices are designed to be microwaved in the packet - you just open one end and pop it in the microwave to heat for 2 minutes. I was worried that pastry heated in the microwave would be soggy, but the packaging includes a cardboard tray which soaks up any moisture from the heating process. The pastry is nice and thick, which gives it a kind of bread like wrap feel which compliments the fillings nicely.
You can also eat the slices cold, so they are ideal for a quick and easy lunch on the go. Whether that be a picnic with the kids or an office lunch, the pastry slices are really versatile and perfect for a quick lunch wherever you are.
Below you'll find some serving suggestions for the pastry slices. I like to use lunch times to get some extra vegetables in my diet so I've paired the slices with a couple of my favourite veg-filled recipes that compliment them well.
First up, the Mexican Chicken Fajita slice. I paired this with my easy Rainbow Coleslaw for a delicious light lunch. The coleslaw adds a rainbow of veggies and some crunch to the meal, and goes beautifully with the Mexican Chicken Fajita filling. Check out the Rainbow Coleslaw recipe here on the blog - it's a brand new recipe that I've published today alongside this review. This would be a great meal idea to pack in a lunchbox for an office lunch.
Next, the Chilli Beef Burrito Slice. I paired this with my easy homemade guacamole and homemade cheesy tortilla chips for a really yummy meal the whole family can enjoy. To make it even quicker and easier, you could buy ready made guacamole and/or tortilla chips, but the homemade versions are really quite special, though I say so myself!
Overall, I was very impressed with the slices and really liked the fillings which were very tasty. I would definitely buy them again for myself and my family.
