In honour of back to school season (my boys go back to school next week, sob!), I'm declaring this week Sandwich Week here on the Eats Amazing blog!
Every day this week I'll be bringing you a new quick and easy fun sandwich idea, and for today's sandwich I'm sharing not one, but four yummy 'sushi' sandwich roll-up recipes.
If you have any trouble loading the tutorial video, click here to watch it on YouTube, and don’t forget to subscribe to the Eats Amazing YouTube channel while you are there for lots more easy recipes, tutorials and fun food ideas!
Sushi sandwich roll-ups are a really quick and easy way to make sandwiches more fun and interesting, and they are really easy to customise to your kids tastes. You can make them with or without crusts (just cut them off before rolling out the bread if don't want the crusts) and there are loads of different fillings you can put inside them.
I'm sharing four easy and child friendly sandwich filling ideas in this post, but there are endless combinations you could use for your own sushi sandwiches.
These roll-ups sandwiches are perfect for packed lunches, bento boxes, snacks, party food or for just a fun lunch or tea at home - try serving them with chopsticks for extra fun and a sneaky way to practice those fine motor skills too (Psst, we've got special child friendly chop sticks in the Eats Amazing Shop if you need some!).
Tuna and Cucumber Sushi Sandwich Roll-Ups
Ingredients:
- 1 slice white or brown bread
- 1 Tbsp tuna mayo
- 2-4 sticks cucumber
Method:
Place the piece of bread on a chopping board and roll out to flatten with a rolling pin. You can leave the crusts on (great for avoiding waste!), but if you'd prefer to remove them, cut them off before rolling the bread out.
Spread the tuna all over the flattened piece of bread.
Place the cucumber sticks in a row at one end of the tuna-covered bread, parallel to a shorter side.
Roll the bread up from the cucumber end first so that the cucumber ends up in the middle. Once rolled, gently but firmly press along the length of the roll so that it holds together.
Cut into 4-6 slices then pack in a lunch box or serve.
Ham and Cream Cheese Sushi Sandwich Roll-Ups
Ingredients:
- 1 slice white or brown bread
- 1 Tbsp cream cheese
- 1 slice ham
Method:
Place the piece of bread on a chopping board and roll out to flatten with a rolling pin. You can leave the crusts on (great for avoiding waste!), but if you'd prefer to remove them, cut them off before rolling the bread out.
Spread the cream cheese all over the flattened piece of bread.
Place the ham on top of the cream cheese.
Roll the bread up then gently but firmly press along the length of the roll so that it holds together.
Cut into 4-6 slices then pack in a lunch box or serve.
Cream Cheese and Jam Sushi Sandwich Roll-Ups
Ingredients:
- 1 slice white or brown bread
- 1 Tbsp cream cheese
- 1-2 tsp jam
Method:
Place the piece of bread on a chopping board and roll out to flatten with a rolling pin. You can leave the crusts on (great for avoiding waste!), but if you'd prefer to remove them, cut them off before rolling the bread out.
Spread the cream cheese all over the flattened piece of bread.
Spread the jam in a line at one end of the cream cheese covered bread, parallel to a shorter side.
Roll the bread up from the jam end first so that the jam ends up in the middle. Once rolled, gently but firmly press along the length of the roll so that it holds together.
Cut into 4-6 slices then pack in a lunch box or serve.
Houmous and Carrot Sushi Sandwich Roll-Ups
Ingredients:
- 1 slice white or brown bread
- 1 Tbsp houmous
- ½ small carrot - grated
Method:
Place the piece of bread on a chopping board and roll out to flatten with a rolling pin. You can leave the crusts on (great for avoiding waste!), but if you'd prefer to remove them, cut them off before rolling the bread out.
Spread the houmous all over the flattened piece of bread.
Pile the grated carrot in a line at one end of the houmous covered bread, parallel to a shorter side.
Roll the bread up from the carrot end first so that the carrot ends up in the middle. Once rolled, gently but firmly press along the length of the roll so that it holds together.
Cut into 4-6 slices then pack in a lunch box or serve.
Enjoy!
