    Nutcracker Themed Food: Banana Ballerinas

Today I've got a cute food idea for some gorgeous banana ballerinas to share with you. This is the first post in a two week series of fabulously fun food, decorations, crafts, activities and games, all themed on the Nutcracker ballet. I'm partnering up with the lovely Meghan from Playground Parkbench to bring you a whole series of ideas that would be perfect to help you plan a fun Nutcracker party this festive season!

Super simple banana ballerinas - the perfect treat for a nutcracker or ballet themed party for kids

Today Meghan has shared a really lovely idea for designing your own ballerina nutcracker ornaments, so I wanted to make something edible to match. I keep seeing these amazing marshmallow ballerinas on Pinterest, and wondered if I could come up with a slightly healthier version (I wanted to get away from pink too, as my seven year old boy is going through the 'bleurgh, pink' stage!), which led me to try my own version with fresh bananas. The result was very tasty indeed, they went down well with everyone and didn't last 5 minutes!

    Banana Ballerinas

    Ingredients:

    • 100g white chocolate
    • 8 small green grapes
    • 2 bananas (the straighter the better)
    • 25g desiccated coconut

    Equipment:

    • 4 large bamboo skewers
    • 8 mini cupcake cases

    Method:

Start by breaking the chocolate into pieces and popping it into a microwavable bowl (the smaller the better). I used white chocolate buttons to speed up the process.

Break or cut all of the bamboo skewers in half, trimming off any splintered ends with kitchen scissors.

With the pointy end of one of the skewers, make a hole in the centre of each mini cupcake case.

Peel the bananas and trim of the ends. Cut each banana into 4 equal pieces.

Thread a grape onto each skewer, then put a cupcake case upside down over the grape (the grape will stop the banana from sliding down the skewer). Place a piece of banana onto each skewer on top of the upside-down cupcake case.

Dip the banana into the chocolate to coat the top half, then sprinkle all over with desiccated coconut.

Leave in a cool place to set, then serve and enjoy!

If you enjoyed this post, do come back to follow our nutcracker series - we'll be posting a new idea every few days until December 16th. You can find all of our posts to date over on Meghans Plan the Perfect Nutcracker Party page, and I'll be putting together a nice round-up of our nutcracker ideas when the series is complete too, I can't wait to get working on the next fun nutcracker themed food idea!

You’ll find lots more festive food ideas for kids in the fun Christmas food section of the Eats Amazing blog too, and ideas from all over the web on my Healthy Christmas Food Pinterest board - why not give it a follow?
