Following on from yesterday's epic birthday snake cake bake (sorry, I couldn't resist that sentence!), I have another fun birthday idea to share with you today - my birthday breakfast sprinkle mix! This fun and easy recipe turns a plain bowl of cereal into something extra special, creating a fun breakfast treat that is perfect for a special occasion.
As well as following old family traditions on birthdays like baking a special cake, or opening cards together first thing in the morning, I love to mix things up a bit and create new fun birthday surprises for my kids too. For the last few years I've allowed my boys to choose whatever breakfast cereal they'd like for their birthday breakfast, with no limits on their choice.
For our every day breakfasts, I'm really quite strict on the cereals that I buy, sticking to low sugar or no added sugar cereals wherever possible, but I have no problem relaxing the rules for a birthday treat twice a year and my boys love the freedom to choose the most sugary sweet cereal they can find!
This year though, I completely forgot to take my younger son to the supermarket to choose his birthday breakfast cereal, so I had to think on my feet to come up with something special at the last minute. A brainwave hit at 11pm as I was finishing off my birthday preparations, and after a quick hunt through my kitchen cupboards, my birthday sprinkle mix was born!
This breakfast treat was such a hit that I think it may well be our new birthday tradition, replacing our usual box of sugary breakfast cereal. Of course there's plenty of sugar inside, but you have complete control over how much (by all means leave out some or all of the sugary treats and add extra dried fruit, nuts or seeds instead if you prefer) and it's just for one day, rather than the full week that our usual box of birthday cereal lasts.
Birthday Sprinkle Mix
Ingredients (serves 1):
- 1 Tbsp raisins
- 1 Tbsp mini marshmallows
- 1 tsp dark chocolate chips
- 1 tsp mini smarties/chocolate beans
- ½ Tbsp freeze dried strawberry pieces
- pinch of gold star sprinkles
- pinch of hundreds and thousands sprinkles
Method:
Layer all of the ingredients in a little jar or glass.
Write or print out a label (download your free labels below) with the following words:
'Sprinkle me on your cereal for an extra special birthday breakfast!'
Tie the label to the jar with pretty string or ribbon.
Pop on the table next to the birthday child's breakfast bowl for a fun birthday surprise!
Note: This recipe is not set in stone, you can use whatever dried fruit, nuts, seeds, treats or sprinkles you have to hand to create your own mix!
If you'd like to print out the labels that I created for our sprinkle mixes (I made one for each child), click here or on the photo below to download your copy. I used pinking shears to create the decorative edges on my labels, but cutting them out with plain scissors will work just as well if you don't have any.
