Save money with a McDonalds breakfast fakeaway by making this quick and easy Bacon and Egg Muffin recipe at home!
This Bacon and Egg McMuffin recipe is one of several fakeaway McDonalds breakfast recipes I'm sharing today - you can find links to all of them in my roundup post: Easy Fakeaway McDonalds Breakfast Recipes.
In this post you'll find the recipe for our easy McDonalds style Bacon and Egg Muffins. These are really easy to make at home and a much cheaper alternative to eating breakfast out. Currently the restaurant price for a Bacon and Egg McMuffin is £2.79, but my homemade version costs just 80p per muffin!
I've broken down the cost of making an individual muffin using supermarket ingredients below. I've based costs on Tesco prices, purely because that's my nearest supermarket and the one I use most regularly, but you may well be able to make them even cheaper by shopping around in other supermarkets. Please note that prices are all current at time of publishing but may change in the future.
Here's how I arrived at my price per muffin:
4 English Muffins 90p (22p each)
15 Cheesy Slices 70p (5p each)
12 Medium Free-Range Eggs £2 (17p each)
14 rashers Streaky Bacon £2.50 (36p for 2 rashers)
One bacon and egg muffin is made up of; muffin 22p + cheese 5p + egg 17p + 2 bacon rashers 36p = 80p each.
We served our muffins with hash browns (restaurant price: £1.09 vs homemade price: 10p each) and orange juice (restaurant price: £1.49 vs homemade price: 25p).
Fakeaway Bacon and Egg McMuffin
Ingredients (makes 1):
- 2 rashers streaky bacon
- melted butter for brushing
- 1 egg
- 1 English muffin
- 1 cheese slice
Method:
Cook the bacon according to pack instructions. I fried ours in a little oil for 3-4 minutes, turning the rashers half-way through.
Once the bacon is cooked, remove from the pan and keep warm until ready to serve.
Brush the inside of an egg ring and the frying pan with a little butter.
Break egg into the ring, then cover the pan and fry for 2-3 minutes until cooked through. If you don't have an egg ring, just break the egg straight into the pan - it might not look as neat but it'll taste just as good!
Whilst the egg is cooking, slice the muffin in half and pop each half into the toaster to lightly toast.
Once toasted, remove the muffin, brush with a little melted butter and add a slice of cheese to the bottom half. Add the bacon rashers and the fried egg, then finish with the top half of the muffin.
For an extra authentic fakeaway experience, wrap your muffin in a square of baking paper and serve with hash browns and orange juice on the side.
Enjoy!
Note: Want to make it a double bacon and egg muffin? Just add a couple of extra rashers of bacon!
