Today I’m reviewing some gorgeous reusable pouches from Nom-Nom Kids. I have had the pouches for a while, so this review is rather overdue, but I’ve certainly used them enough in the meantime to be able to write a well informed review about them!
I had already tried some reusable pouches, so I was familiar with the idea when I received the pouches from Nom-Nom Kids. The thing that instantly struck me about these pouches was the very bright and cheerful design, which has clearly been created with children in mind. Small Child was very interested in them, and couldn’t wait to take one with his packed lunch, and his interest only increased when I showed him the really fun feature of this pouch – the roaring lion that appears when the pouch is opened up. It became something of a game to seal up an empty pouch, take off the lid and blow into it to make the lion appear! That’s Small Child’s roaring lion face below by the way, in case it isn’t obvious!
The pouches are very easy to use, with a ziplock style opening on the side. This side opening makes each pouch very easy to fill, and also easy to clean. They are dishwasher safe, although I don’t have a dishwasher so wash everything by hand – I’ve found a bottle brush is useful to make sure the pouch is completely clean inside. The lids are large, (always a bonus if you’re prone to losing things as I am) and seem to be designed to minimise the risk of choking, so are perfect for babies and small children. There is a clear window in the back of the pouch, so you can see the contents, and a clear ‘maximum fill line’ too, which is very useful for avoiding overfilling (see picture below).
Here’s the back of one of the pouches (filled with homemade milkshake). As you can see it has a really great little box on the back to help you keep track of the contents, with space for a name, date, and instructions for storage. This would be really useful for anyone needing to send food into nursery or pre-school with their children, and you can even buy a non-permanent pen for use on the pouch over on the Nom-Nom Kids website!
In the interests of total honesty, I must admit that I have had one slight disaster with them – I didn’t close the seal properly and poor Small Child ended up with yoghurt over his lunch box, BUT, this was purely down to user error. I was rushing one morning when we were late for school, and snapped it shut without checking that the seal was fully closed all the way along. Other than that, I have used them loads of times and never had an issue. As long as you shut it properly, the seal is very strong and completely leak-proof!
Such is my trust in their non-leaky properties, I have happily sent homemade milkshakes to school in these pouches without a second thought. I make up a batch and freeze it in the pouches, then pack a frozen pouch in Small Child’s lunch bag alongside his lunch box. The frozen pouch keeps the lunch cool, and defrosts enough to be ready to drink by lunch time.
Here’s my quick recipe for homemade milkshake – it’s so tasty and easy to make and helps you avoid all the extra additives, colours and sugar you find in the shop bought stuff!
Handful fresh blueberries (or other berry of choice)
2 Tbs yoghurt (I used blueberry flavour)
Measure out the milk into a large jug, peel the bananas and break into pieces (I used bananas that I had frozen), then add to the jug with the berries and yoghurt. Whizz with the blender until you have a thick liquid, adding a little more milk if needed to get your desired consistency. If you like it a little sweeter, you can add a little honey to taste and blend again until mixed in. Serve immediately or pour into pouches & freeze for later use.
Overall I’m really impressed with the these pouches, I really can’t find any fault with them! They are beautifully designed, and a lot of thought has clearly gone into making them as user friendly as possible. They are reusable, dishwasher safe, freezer safe, and free from any nasties (BPA, Phthalate & PVC Free.). They could be used in so many ways: to store and carry yoghurt, smoothies, baby food, purees, jellies, sauces and dressings to name just a few. I mostly use them to send a portion of yoghurt with Small Child’s lunches, as well as the occasional smoothie or home-made milkshake.
