October seems to be racing past at speed and I'm struggling to catch up with myself at the moment, so I'm going to share a couple of fun Halloween themed lunches together in this post. I've got two Mummy bento lunches to share - spooky mummies make a really fun theme to play with for Halloween food as you can use strips of cheese, tortilla wrap, bread, even pastry to make cute little edible mummies!
The first lunch was packed in our blue Monbento Tresor bento box. I started this lunch off by making a couple of 'mummies on a stick', which were inspired by a super cute mummy on a stick by Cristi of Bent On Better Lunches. Mine were made with wholemeal seeded bread and roast beef slices. I just made up a normal sandwich, then cut it into small squares and threaded them onto bamboo skewers, which I trimmed down to fit in the lunch box. I finished them off with eyes cut from cheese using a tiny round cutter, which I dotted with an edible marker pen.
In the top half of the lunch box I packed a mummified clementine orange (see details below), some raw yellow pepper strips and some raw sugar snap peas. I decorated the vegetables with a cute mummy robot cupcake ring. I also packed a reusable food pouch full of yoghurt in his lunch bag (not shown).
The mummified clementine orange was a last minute addition to this lunch and it really made Small Child laugh! He insisted I take a photo of it all by itself and left the house for school shaking his head in amused disbelief at the slightly crazy behaviour of his bento loving mother! To make it, I simply wrapped an orange in short strips of masking tape (leaving a clear gap at the back to make it easy for him to peel the orange) and added a couple of googly eye bento picks to finish it off. When it came to lunch time, he couldn't bring himself to eat it (too cute apparently!) but hunger won and he polished off on the way home from school!
The second mummy lunch used some leftovers from the Mummy pastry pizza pies I'd made the day before. They were a massive hit with Small Child and he immediately earmarked the leftovers for his lunch the next day. Along with the mummy pies, I also packed a mummy apple (the idea for this was completely inspired by these awesome apple mummies from Two Healthy Kitchens), which I brushed with lemon juice and topped with dark chocolate chip eyes, some raw carrot disks and blueberries, which I decorated with another mummy robot cupcake ring. This lunch was packed in our Munchkin bento lunch box.
