I know from personal experience that toddlers can be notoriously picky eaters, and their taste buds are constantly evolving, leading to food refusal that is unpredictable at best! I found that during the toddler years, my boys often turned their noses up at foods that they had loved the day before, with healthy foods like veggies and fruit often being the most rejected. My youngest, aged 4, still has his moments when it comes to family meal times, it's a constant challenge to keep his diet varied and healthy.

Making food fun can be a great way to tempt those picky little eaters to try something new or reintroduce a rejected food. It can be fun for parents too - I find that making fun food can introduce a burst of creativity into the otherwise mundane task of feeding your family. You could also get the kids involved in the creative process - give them a selection of healthy foods and see where their imagination takes them! Fun food isn't just for picky eaters either, it can help encourage a love of good food in all little ones.

You don't have to create great works of art to make food fun though - check out the super simple fun food tips from Organix below!

I was commissioned to create the fun food plate designs below for Organix earlier this year, along with some fun stop-motion videos for them (which you can see over on the Organix Facebook page) and I had a lot of fun making them! My boys helped me to come up with the design ideas and thoroughly enjoyed taste testing them for me too, they made great healthy snacks!

Rocket - 4 Fun and easy healthy food art plates for toddlers with step by step instructions - Eats Amazing UK

    Space Rocket Fun Food Plate

    Ingredients

    • 3 Organix carrot sticks
    • 2 x pieces of peeled cucumber – 1 round slice, 1 long slice cut into a triangle
    • 1 slice of emmental cheese cut into a moon and some stars
    • 1 slice of red pepper

    Method:

Place the 3 carrot sticks on a plate to form the body of the rocket.  Add the cucumber triangle for the top of the rocket.

Make cuts into one edge of the red pepper slice to form flames then add to the bottom of the rocket.

Place the cucumber circle on top of the carrot sticks for the rocket window.

Add the cheese moon to the plate.  Finish your fun food plate with a scatter of cheese stars.

Lion - 4 Fun and easy healthy food art plates for toddlers with step by step instructions - Eats Amazing UK

Add the baby corn slices for eyes and top with the two tiny circles of cucumber for the pupils.

Break each of the 4 carrot stixs in half and place on the plate around the cheese circle, alternating with the cheese & herb puffs to form the lion’s mane.

Finish off with the 6 slivers of cheese – arranging 3 on each side of the lion’s face for the whiskers.

    Jellyfish Fun Food Plate

    Ingredients

    • 1 Organix cheese ring biscuit
    • ¼ small carrot cut into a bundle of thin strips and some little fish shapes
    • 2 rectangle slices of peeled cucumber
    • 2 peas
    • A dab of cream cheese (optional)

    Method:

Cut each cucumber slice in half with a spiky zig zag pattern to form 4 pieces of seaweed. Place them at the bottom of the plate.

Add the two peas to the biscuit for eyes. You can ‘glue’ them in place with cream cheese if wanted.
