I thought I would share with you the method that I used to make the LEGO shaped egg in my last post. It was my first attempt at a moulded egg and I was really pleased with how it turned out. It was also a lot easier than I expected, which is always a bonus! You do need one of the LEGO mini (4 brick) snack boxes to make it, but if you have one already or are thinking of getting one it's a bonus extra use for it!
To start with, you need to hard boil your egg. I used a UK large sized organic free-range egg; you may need to experiment with sizes depending on where you get your eggs from. Place the egg in cold water and bring it to the boil on the hob. As the water starts to heat up and get to boiling point, stir the water so that the egg spins (being careful not to crack the egg). This is to centre the yolk, which makes the finished egg less likely to crack or split when being moulded. Continue to spin it for the first minute or so of boiling. Boil for 8 minutes.
Once the egg is cooked, carefully tip the hot water out of the pan and replace it with cold water. Quickly peel the egg whilst it is still hot, dipping it into the cold water as you do so to avoid burning your fingers.
Dip the LEGO box in cold water to help avoid sticking. Place the egg in the bottom half of the LEGO box whilst it is still hot. Pop the lid on, and press down gently to mould the egg. Gradually increase the pressure, pushing the two parts of the box together firmly. The box needs to be held together as the egg cools down, so you could use an elastic band, or failing that balance a couple of tin cans on top of it (as I did, see below) to keep up the pressure. Place the box into a large bowl of cold water and leave for 5-10 minutes to cool completely.
Once the egg has cooled, it should easily slip out of the box, ready to be placed in your lunch.
The above method also works for 'proper' egg moulds - I have just received some in the post so will update once I've tried them out. I'm quite excited about the various possibilities for moulded eggs!
Update: I now sell a range of egg moulds in the Eats Amazing Shop! Click here to see the full range.
