Quick and easy pitta bread pizza recipe for kids with free printable kid friendly recipe sheet

It's nearly time for another Live Kids Cook-Along over on the Eats Amazing Facebook page and this time we are making pitta bread pizzas! These fun pitta pizzas are super easy to make for a quick lunch dinner or tea that kids will love!

If you can’t make it to join us live, I'll be adding the video here on this post once it's over so you can cook along with your kids in your own kitchen at whatever time suits you best!

Update: We cooked this recipe live on 7th April, click here or on  the video below to watch and cook along in your own time!

If you don't have pitta breads, don't worry, I've offered a range of different ingredient options in the recipe below, so you can adapt the recipe to suit whatever bread, cheese or pizza toppings you have in your cupboards right now.

To make cooking with the kids easier for you, you’ll also find a special printable child friendly recipe sheet towards the end of this post, as well as the usual recipe card at the very end.

How to make an easy pizza with pitta bread base - quick and easy recipe for kids

    Pitta Bread Pizza

    Ingredients (makes 2):

    • 2 pitta breads
    • 1 Tbsp tomato puree
    • handful grated mozzarella cheese
    • extra pizza toppings of your choice (optional)

    Method:

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F/Gas Mark 4).

Prepare any toppings you want to add to your pizza. We used sliced Peperami and sliced red pepper.

Place the pitta breads on an oven tray.

Spread a thin layer of tomato puree over the top of each pitta bread, going right to the edges.

Sprinkle over the grated cheese, again, going right to the edges.

Add your pizza toppings. You can arrange them in fun shapes (faces are always fun!) or just sprinkle them evenly over the pizzas - it's entirely up to you!

How to make Pitta Pizza Step 4 - add toppings of your choice

Bake in the oven for 8-10 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbling.

Leave to cool for a few minutes before serving, then serve whole or cut into slices.

    Alternative Pizza Base Ideas:

If you don't have pitta breads, try other breads for the pizza bases - unless indicated below, they all cook in the same way, for 8-10 minutes in the oven. Here are some suggested bread ideas that work really well for pizza bases:

    • English Muffins (split in half)
    • Bagels (split in half)
    • Tortilla Wraps (cook for a slightly shorter time - 5-8 minutes)
    • Flatbread
    • Naan bread
    • baguette (split in half lengthways)

What cheese can I use on my pizza?

If you don't have grated mozzarella cheese, try the following substitutions instead:

    • grated cheddar cheese
    • grated red Leicester
    • grated hard goats cheese
    • grated Edam
    • grated Gouda
    • grated Emmental
    • grated Gruyere
    • torn or grated fresh mozzarella ball
    • mini mozzarella pearls
    • crumbled feta cheese
    • crumbled soft goats cheese

What toppings can I put on my pizza?

Everyone has their favourite pizza toppings, but just in case you're looking for some fresh inspiration, try these easy pizza topping ideas:

    Vegetarian:

    • sweetcorn
    • red, orange, yellow or green pepper (sliced or chopped)
    • tomato slices
    • cherry tomatoes
    • spring onion
    • red onion (rings, sliced or chopped)
    • spinach leaves
    • sliced mushrooms
    • olives
