Today I'm serving up a healthier spin on the classic freakshake - my healthy smoothie freakshake for kids! This fun recipe makes a perfect treat for hot summer days. Rather than visiting a cafe or restaurant, you can easily make them at home, so this easy cooking project can save you money and encourage the kids to get creative in the kitchen at the same time!
I must confess that I originally photographed this recipe last summer, but promptly lost the piece of paper that I'd written the recipe on so I couldn't share it with you. I used the idea as inspiration for my fun Halloween Freakshakes recipe (why not pop over and bookmark it for later in the year), but my original recipe never did turn up. My boys were delighted when I found the photos again recently and decided to recreate the recipe as they loved it the first time around, as well as the second! In the meantime, I've also got a bit more organised and am keeping all my new recipes in a master file as and when I create and test them, so hopefully I won't lose any more!
I used simple, healthy ingredients to make these smoothie freakshakes - a yummy Greek yogurt and fruit based smoothie, fresh whipped cream on top and fresh fruit to decorate. There is a fair amount of natural sugar in them but also some great nutrients, like protein from the yogurt and vitamins from the fruit. They are lower in sugar and far healthier than the donut and sprinkle laden super sugary concoctions you can order in restaurants and cafes, that's for sure!
Healthy Smoothie Freakshakes
Ingredients (serves 2):
For the purple layer:
- 150g frozen blueberries
- 1 tsp honey (optional)
- 50ml milk
- 200g Greek yogurt
For the pink layer:
- 150g frozen raspberries
- 1 tsp honey (optional)
- 50ml milk
- 200g Greek yogurt
To decorate:
- 12 red grapes
- handful fresh blueberries
- 2 fresh strawberries
- 150ml double cream
- 4 bamboo skewers
- Paper straws
Method:
Start by gathering your supplies and preparing the fruit decorations.
Thread the grapes onto two bamboo skewers - 6 grapes to each skewer.
Thread blueberries onto the two remaining bamboo skewers, to around the same length as the grapes.
Cut a slit in the base of each strawberry, so that they can be pushed onto the side of the glasses.
Pour the cream into a bowl and whip until stiff. Carefully spoon into a disposable piping bag with a large star icing tip.
Once the decorations are ready, and you have two clean glasses to hand, make the smoothies.
Place all of the purple smoothie ingredients (frozen blueberries, honey to taste, milk and Greek yogurt) into a blender or food processor. Whizz together on a fast setting until fully blended and smooth
Pour the purple smoothie into the two glasses.
Working quickly, rinse the blender jug and fill with the pink smoothie ingredients (frozen raspberries, honey to taste, milk and Greek yogurt). Whizz together on a fast setting until fully blended and smooth
Carefully pour the pink smoothie into the glasses on top of the purple smoothie. The mixture should be thick enough to rest on top and form two layers.
Top each glass with a generous swirl of the whipped cream.
Decorate with the fruit you prepared earlier - push a grape skewer and a blueberry skewer into each glass (fruit side up!) and add a strawberry to the side of each glass.
Add a couple of paper straws to each glass if wanted and serve immediately.
Enjoy!
