In today’s post I’m sharing some Very Hungry Caterpillar themed food. World Book Day was yesterday, but we are finishing our week with one last book bento lunch. Obviously today’s theme is ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’, a book which has been a firm favourite in our house ever since a baby Small Child started chewing the corners of his favourite board books. It was also a favourite of mine as a child, and I’m sure I’m not alone in that! As with all of my other posts this week, I am also hosting one last linky party at the end of this post, so check out the links for more book related fun, and of course please add links to any blog posts you may have on today’s theme. This could be a food or a craft post, as long as it is related to the theme in some way.
In this lunch Small Child had a ham sandwich, cut by hand into a leaf shape and painted with a little green food colouring to look more like a leaf. The sandwich was topped with a little caterpillar made from grapes and a few sprinkles. On the side he had some carrot disks, complete with little holes where the caterpillar had munched through them, a babybel cheese decorated to look like the hungry caterpillar’s head, and for a special treat some hula-hoop crisps (we think the caterpillar ate the middles from these too!).
Sadly Small Child was ill today, so had to have the day off school. I must admit this made my job slightly easier – I had already packed the main part of his lunch the night before, but I was able to make his dessert on a plate instead of a lunchbox. As he has a horrible cold, I thought lots of fruit might help boost his vitamin intake, so for dessert he had a plate of fruit, all with little holes nibbled in it by the caterpillar. Following the format of the book (but not the exact fruits), he had 1 satsuma, 2 strawberries, 3 slices of apple, 4 green grapes and 5 blueberries.
Of course no Hungry Caterpillar lunch would be complete without a butterfly, so he finished the meal off with a raspberry yoghurt in a cute butterfly shaped silicone muffin cup decorated with some rainbow sprinkles.
He did quite well with this lunch, considering that he is ill, and managed to nibble at a good portion of everything in the lunch. Hope he’s feeling better soon! Grace
