    Gruffalo Book Bento Lunch

Today I'm sharing a fun and healthy Gruffalo book bento lunch, which I made for Small Child on a day when he had a school trip to see 'The Gruffalo' at the theatre recently.  I really enjoyed making this fun bento lunch, especially coming up with some fresh ideas for Gruffalo themed foods, and I think that some of the ideas would work well if you wanted to make them in bulk for Gruffalo party food too.

To start the Gruffalo lunch, I made knobbly knees tortilla wraps, which were filled with houmous and a little baby leaf spinach and decorated with an edible marker pen.  Next I added orange eyes (raw carrot disks dotted with a black edible marker pen), poisonous warts (peas) and purple prickles (Bear yoyo fruit strips - cut into triangles).  He also had roasted fox (BBQ chicken topped with alphabet bento picks spelling out FOX), a Babybel cheese owl, scrambled snake (a fruit string topped with a couple of edible icing eyes) and some terrible teeth made from a chopped cheese string.  I finished the lunch off with some nuts (grapes dipped in chocolate) and a mouse food pick.

Here's a close up of a couple of the compartments. I was really pleased with how the Babybel Owl came out! To make it, I first cut a circle from the wax using a circle shaped mini bento cutter to make his tummy.  I then used a slightly bigger circle cutter to cut a piece from the top of the Babybel, then, using the wax from the spare piece, I used the same cutter to cut out two wings and stuck them into place.  I finished the owl off with two edible icing eyes, and made a beak from a spare piece of wax.  The eyes were stuck on with a little cream cheese, the wax wings and beak just stuck without any 'glue' needed - that's the beauty of the mouldable wax on a Babybel!

Small Child LOVED this Gruffalo lunch, mainly because he was really excited about his theatre trip I think! He really enjoyed the show, and excitedly talked about it for several days afterwards!
