I'm really excited to share today's post - a fun movie themed lunch based on 'Missing Link', which arrives in cinemas here in the UK today! This lunch was commissioned by Lionsgate to celebrate the launch of the film, and I had a lot of fun creating it.
The film tells the story of Sir Lionel Frost (Hugh Jackman): a brave and dashing adventurer who considers himself to be the world’s foremost investigator of myths and monsters. The trouble is, no one else seems to agree. He sees a chance to prove himself by traveling to America’s Pacific Northwest to discover the world’s most legendary creature. A living remnant of Man’s primitive ancestry. The Missing Link.
Enter Mr. Link (Zach Galifianakis): the slightly silly, surprisingly smart and soulful beast who Sir Lionel discovers. As species go, he’s as endangered as they get; he’s possibly the last of his kind, he’s lonely, and he believes that Sir Lionel is the one man alive who can help him. Together they set out on a daring quest around the world to seek out Link’s distant relatives in the fabled valley of Shangri-La!
This lunch theme was quite a challenge to create (no bad thing, I love a challenge!), but I'm SO pleased with how my design for the Mr Link sandwich came out. My boys loved him too, so I had to make them one each. They didn't last long once they'd admired them for a few seconds!
If you're taking the kids to the cinema over the Easter holidays, this is a fantastic film that they are sure to love. Why not have a go at making a Mr Link Sandwich together for a fun activity before or after the film?
Missing Link Themed Bento Lunch
Ingredients:
For the Mr Link Sandwich:
- 2 slices wholemeal bread
- sandwich filling of your choice
- ½ large carrot
- 1 slice ham
- pink & black food writer pens
- 1 slice cheese
- 1 Tbsp soft cream cheese
- 2 edible candy eyes
On the side:
- 6 sugar snap peas
- 5 thick slices cucumber
- small handful blueberries
- 1 round slice honeydew melon
- 4 mini cookies
Method:
First make the Mr Link Sandwich. Make up a sandwich with two slices of bread and a filling of your choice.
Using a large round cookie cutter and a sharp knife (see my video for example), cut the sandwich into an oval shape. Place to one side.
Peel the carrot and discard the skin. Use the peeler to cut thin strips from the carrot. Cut the strips into lots of triangles, this will be for Mr Link's hair.
Using two smaller round cookie cutters and sharp knife, cut a face shape from the ham. From the offcuts, cut a nose shape and a thin semi-circle for his brow.
Colour the nose piece with the food writer pens - pink around the outside and two black nostrils.
Using a mini round cutter, cut a thin semi-circle for his mouth.
Spread a layer of soft cream cheese over the top of the oval shaped sandwich. Arrange the carrot triangles on top, in layers all around the outside of the sandwich for the hair.
Place the ham face piece on top of the carrot hair, then add the ham nose, brow, cheese mouth and two edible candy eyes to complete the face.
Place the sandwich in the lunch box, then pack the sides of fruit and veggies.
For the vegetables, pack sugar snap peas and cucumber slices, cut into leaf shapes, to represent the forest that Mr Link came from.
For the fruit, cut the melon into triangles and arrange in the lunch box along with the blueberries to represent the mountains that he travels to in the film.
Finish the lunch with some mini cookies for a treat - they pop up throughout the film!
Enjoy!
