Small Child woke up feeling under the weather one Saturday morning recently, and seeing that he was in need of a little TLC, I offered to make him breakfast in bed as a special treat. He requested toast, so I made him some heart shaped toast with a little extra love on the side to cheer him up.
To make this simple breakfast I toasted a piece of bread, spread it with honey and cut it into heart shapes using a heart shaped sandwich cutter. I transferred it to a plate and sprinkled the toast with a few red heart sprinkles that I had in my cake decorating supply box. On the side I added a some red grapes, which I turned into hearts with the aid of a small sharp knife and a few food picks.
I got the idea of making hearts from grapes after seeing Cristi from Bento On Better Lunches use the technique to make hearts from baby carrots and cherry tomatoes. Here’s my quick tutorial:
1. With a sharp knife, cut each grape in half on the diagonal, as shown in the picture below.

As mentioned above this technique works for cherry tomatoes and baby carrots, and you could try it with olives too. Use them as a garnish for any meal or snack, to add a little extra love to your plate or lunchbox.
