Today I'm sharing a fun food tutorial for some cute (and easy to make) love bug sandwiches!
These fun little sandwiches are perfect for popping in lunch boxes or serving up for a fun Valentines meal for kids.
This fun sandwich idea isn't just for Valentine's Day though, as you can easily swap the heart 'spots' for circles instead to make cute bug sandwiches you can serve all the year around!
They'd be perfect for bug or ladybug themed party food, and they're quick and easy to make so great for making in bulk.
I served these sandwiches up as part of a fun Valentine's themed lunch recently and they were a real hit! I've shared all the details of that lunch here: Cute Valentines Lunch - it makes a great fun and special meal to celebrate Valentine's Day with children!
Love Bug Sandwiches
Ingredients (makes 1):
- 2 pieces wholemeal bread
- butter or spread
- 1 slice of ham or sandwich filling of your choice
- 1 slice cheese
- 2 edible candy eyeballs
Method:
Start by cutting two circles from the bread, using your largest round cookie cutter that will fit on the bread slice. Spread with butter or spread.
If using ham or a similar filling, cut a round slice to go in the sandwich. Cutting the pieces separately like this before assembling the sandwich will make the whole thing much neater with cleaner edges.
Put the pieces together to form a round sandwich, then place to one side.
Using the same cookie cutter that you used for the sandwich, cut a circle from the cheese.
Using a smaller cookie cutter, cut out a piece of the circle for the head.
Cut a tall, thin slice from the circle to divide it into two 'wings'.
Using a mini bento cutter, cut heart shaped 'spots' into the wings, as symmetrical as possible.
Carefully lift the cheese and place on top of the sandwich.
Finish your love bug off with two candy eyeballs.
You can 'glue' these on with cream cheese and mayo if wanted to keep them in place.
Pop in a lunch box or serve immediately.
Enjoy!
