Yesterday it was my last day of childminding before Easter, and the first day of the holidays for Small Child, so I decided to have a little Easter Fun with the children. I made them their lunch as usual, but told them they had a special dessert for afterwards. They were trying to guess what it was, and while they were busy eating their lunch and discussing the matter, I popped into the living room and hid their 'dessert' in the form of an egg hunt, ready for them to find!
I had prepared the eggs before lunch, and they contained an assortment of healthy snacks plus some (inedible) little fluffy chicks mixed in to add to the Easter fun. I had 2 of each colour/design of egg, so to make it fair I filled them up in pairs; the idea being that each child would have one of each colour/design of egg, so get the same selection of food. The snacks in the eggs were as follows; red grapes, blueberries, raisins, mini organix oat bites, a chopped dried fruit bar (apricot flavour) and some mini organix alphabet biscuits.
Once the children had finished the first part of their lunch, I presented them each with an Easter basket, and sent them on their way to hunt out all the eggs. They had great fun finding them all, and worked together beautifully; enthusiastically pointing out eggs to each other and conscientiously sticking to the rule of one of each egg colour per child.
Once they had found them all, we went back into the kitchen and counted and sorted the eggs on a cute bunny shaped egg plate that I found in the pound shop last week (I have to say, the pound shop has been brilliant for fun Easter bargains this year!). This meant that we got to throw a little maths into the mix, and I was also able to check that each child had one of each colour as planned.
I gave each child a plate with a chick shaped silicone cup full of organic raspberry yoghurt in the middle, and let them empty their eggs out onto their plates so that they could eat the contents (except the fluffy chicks, of course!). The food all disappeared quickly, but I think the eggs with the fluffy chicks in were their favourite!
The children really enjoyed their Easter egg hunt, and didn't seem to notice the absence of chocolate or sweets in the activity. I'm sure there will be more than enough chocolate floating around on Easter Sunday, so I was very happy to keep it off the menu for now.
Have you held an Easter Egg hunt this year? What did you put in your eggs?
