The Big Bad Fox & Other Tales - Bento Lunch for Kids

I'm on a bit a roll with movie themed lunches recently and my boys are loving it! Today I'm sharing a fun bento lunch themed on 'The Big Bad Fox and Other Tales', which arrives in cinemas here in the UK today!

Fun Big Bad Fox and Other Tales movie themed bento box lunch for kids - with video tutorial and full instructions

This film tells 3 different stories about a gang of animal misfits and their hilarious adventures.  A lazy stork leaves the delivery of a baby in the care of a rabbit, a pig and a duck. A big, bad fox tries to live up to his reputation whilst he unwittingly adopts three confused baby chicks and in the film's final tale, the animals embark on a hair brained scheme to replace Father Christmas!

The stories are told through gorgeous hand-drawn animation, so I dug out my edible food writer pens to try to recreate the style in our lunch box. I themed the lunch box on the title story of the big bad fox, complete with, Big Bad Fox sandwich, a boiled egg hen and the three little chicks!

If you have any trouble loading the bento lunch tutorial video above, click here to watch it on YouTube, and don’t forget to subscribe to the Eats Amazing YouTube channel while you are there for lots more easy recipes, tutorials and fun food ideas! As well as the tutorial video above, you’ll also find full instructions further down this post.

How to make a fun bento lunch for kids themed on the movie The Big Bad Fox and Other Tales - cute and easy food art idea

The Big Bad Fox & Other Tales Lunch Box

    Ingredients:

    • 1 egg
    • ½ carrot
    • black edible food writer pen
    • handful green grapes
    • 5 sugar snap peas
    • Small handful fresh blueberries
    • 2 slices wholemeal bread
    • butter or spread
    • 1 slice cheese
    • 1 tortilla wrap
    • orange edible food writer pen

    Method:

First make the boiled egg hen. Place the egg in a small saucepan of water, bring to the boil then cook for 6-7 minutes. Once the egg is cooked, immediately transfer it to cold water, then peel once cool.

Cut a thin round from the thick end of the carrot. Using a mini hand-shaped cutter (or a mini flower cutter would work to), cut out a piece of carrot for the hen's comb and trim it into shape with a knife (see video for more detail). Cut a small triangle of carrot for the beak.

Using the tip of a sharp knife, cut a slit in the top of the egg then push the carrot comb into place. Add the carrot beak in the same way, then dot on two eyes using a black edible food writer pen.

Using a julienne peeler, cut the remaining carrot into thin straw-like strips to make an edible nest for the egg hen.  If you don’t have a julienne peeler, you can also use a sharp knife to cut the carrot into really thin strips or grate the carrot instead.

Arrange the carrot strips in a small compartment of the lunch box to form a nest. Pop the egg hen on top.

Slice the grapes in half length-ways. Place them in the second small lunchbox compartment along with the sugar snap peas, arranged to look like grass. Add 3 chick bento picks to decorate.

Fill the smallest compartment with blueberries.

Use the two pieces of bread to make a sandwich. I filled mine with cheese but you can use any sandwich filling of your choice.

Cut the sandwich into a neat rectangle that will easily fit in the lunch box. Place the sandwich on top of the tortilla wrap, then cut around it so you have a rectangle of wrap the same size as the sandwich.

Using black and orange edible food writer pens, draw the Big Bad Fox on the rectangle of tortilla wrap.

    Enjoy!
