Food Alphabet: Themed Bento Lunch - Letter A

Today I’m starting a new series on the blog a food alphabet of Alphabet Themed Lunches! I was asking Small Child if he had any ideas for his lunches a few weeks ago and he asked if I could make a lunch for each letter.  I thought it was a great idea (if only because it provides the inspiration for 26 lunches!), and we immediately sat down to come up with a basic list of foods and objects beginning with each letter of the alphabet.  We’ve been working our way through the alphabet one letter at a time, beginning with A, of course! Some letters are proving to be trickier than others, but A was nice and easy.

In his A themed lunch Small Child had Apple slices, decorated with Aeroplane picks, chicken salad sandwiches (made using some Warburtons sandwich thins which were in a hamper that I recently won, thanks Warburtons!) decorated with carrot Arrows, cucumber slices and carrot As, a mini Babybel cheese with a leaf bento pick added to make it look like an Apple, and an A cut from the wax to decorate, an Ant (plastic, for decoration only!), rolls of chicken skewered on A Alphabet food picks, a music note, representing the music pitch A, and last but not least some chopped dried Apricots.

Small Child really enjoyed his first alphabet bento lunch, and was full of ideas for the next one too! Can you think of any other foods or items beginning with A that I missed?

What a fantastic idea! I'll certainly be doing this when my son starts school in September.

What alphabet cutters do you use? Your letters are much nicer than any cutters I can find 🙂 Thanks

I would also like to know. I found a set, but they do not give a clean cut.

Hi, for these lunches I used a plastic set that I've had for years, I've not been able to find them anywhere since though unfortunately. I have some slightly smaller plastic alphabet cutters in the Eats Amazing Shop which work quite well too: /shop/mini-bento-cutters/mini-alphabet-bento-cutters

If you struggle to get a clean cut with yours, try trimming them down afterwards with a small sharp knife to tidy up the edges. It really depends on what you are cutting too, for example I tend to struggle to cut pepper into shapes but carrot, cucumber and cheese are much better for bento cutters.

          Hope that helps!
