    Spooky Spider Energy Balls Recipe

With just over a month to go until Halloween, I've decided it's time to roll out a few of the spooky treats I've been working on recently, so today I'm sharing a fun spooky spider energy balls recipe.

A fun energy balls recipe for Halloween - spooky spider themed food for kids from Eats Amazing UK - great Halloween party food idea - nut free and dairy free

When served as plain energy balls, this recipe is dairy free, nut free and free from refined sugar, so it would be great for lunch boxes or as an after school snack, whether you make them plain or add some spidery features! It's definitely the season for spider themed fun food though, so if you have a few spare minutes do try the fun version!

     Spooky Spider Energy Balls

    Ingredients:

    • 100g oats
    • 50g sesame seeds
    • 50g desiccated coconut
    • 1 tbs chia seeds
    • 100g dried apricots, quartered
    • 200g dried mixed fruit
    • 1 tbs honey (optional)

    To decorate:

    • pretzels
    • yoghurt covered sunflower seeds OR white chocolate chips

Fun spider energy balls recipe for kids - great for Halloween party food

    Method:

Put your ingredients into a food processor or blender in the order shown above (driest ingredients first).  Whizz up until everything is finely chopped and well combined.  You may need to scrape down the sides a few times before everything is well mixed.

Tip the mixture into a bowl, then take handfuls of the mixture and roll into walnut sized balls.  You may need to rinse off your hands every now and again during this process as they can get a little sticky.  You'll find it easier to roll smooth balls with slightly damp hands too.

Pop the balls into an airtight container and place in the fridge until ready to eat.

To decorate, break the pretzels into pieces to form the legs (I found that the two largest curved sides of each pretzel worked best) then add 8 'legs' to each energy ball - 4 on each side.  Add yoghurt covered sunflower seeds or white chocolate chips for the eyes and serve immediately.

Store in an airtight container in the fridge, the plain un-decorated balls should last for at least 5 days.

I'm definitely going to give these a go. So many recipes like this contain nuts which mean they can't go to school. In fact I realised too late that my daughter had taken a Nakd bar into school yesterday for a snack at singing club!

Success - Gobbled down by my 2 year old! The slightly tougher critics are still at school but I'm sure one of them will like it - although they only get plain balls, no creative spiders here!

Very successful. Just made another batch for lunch boxes, after school treats, and for me to take to work - a lot cheaper than Nakd bars!
