Todays post is a review of the reusable food pouches made by My Lil Pouch, an Australian company that have recently expanded to the UK. I must admit that when I was first offered the product to try out, I was a little sceptical. I wasn’t sure what I would use it for, but I agreed to give them a go, as I could see the potential to be a little ‘greener’ by using them. I’m so glad I did, because I’m absolutely converted!
I was sent two each of the 100ml and 200ml pouches (I’ve shown one of each below). The first thing I noticed about them was that they have decent sized lids on them, which I think is really well thought out – they seem to be designed to minimise the risk of choking and as they are quite large they are harder to lose too, which is always a bonus in my slightly chaotic house!
I first tried them out with homemade smoothies. We all love a tasty fruit smoothie in our family, but the good quality ones can be really expensive to buy. I have been known to occasionally buy smoothie pouches to send in Small Child’s lunchbox, but only once in a blue moon when they are on special offer, so I thought that making my own would be a great way of giving him that extra fruit boost without the hefty price tag.
When I started thinking about it, I could see two other great advantages too; having complete control over the ingredients going into them, and from a ‘green’ perspective; eliminating numerous packets that would otherwise go straight into landfill.
I made up a batch of blackberry & banana smoothie to go with a weekend breakfast (some of my smoothie recipes can be found here), and popped the leftovers into the two 200ml pouches. Some tips for first use; open up the gusseted bottom so that you can fit more in, and pop the lid on before you start to fill it (easy mistakes to make…!).
One of the really great features of these food pouches is that they are freezer safe. This means that you can make up a batch of smoothies and freeze them for later use. I froze these ones then put them in Small Child’s lunch bag first thing in the morning. They helped to keep his lunches cool and were defrosted by lunchtime. He had a little trouble opening the pouch the first time, but after a bit of practice he has no trouble at all now. He really enjoyed having them, and has asked me to make smoothies again several times since then.
I’ve used the 100ml pouches for yoghurt, which also went down well. Small Child loved ‘drinking’ his yoghurt from the spout, and again it will save me a small fortune in yoghurt pouches and tubes. I’m able to buy large tubs of yoghurt when they are on offer and fill up several pouches at a time, freezing any that I don’t need immediately, which reduces packaging, saves money and prevents waste.
I found that cleaning the pouches was easy, though a bottle brush is necessary really to make sure it’s thoroughly clean. They are dishwasher safe, so those of you with a dishwasher would probably find the cleaning process rather easier.
Other suggestions for use can be found on the My Lil Pouch website including baby food, purees, jellies, custards, sauces and dressings. I’d be interested to see how jelly would work in one, it sounds like fun!
All in all, the My Lil Pouch food pouches have gone down very well with both Small Child and myself. I’d like to see more of a variety in the colours and packet designs, but that’s just a minor detail; the overall design of the pouches are really good. They are great quality, easy to fill, easy to close, leak proof and easy to clean too. I expect that they will really come into their own when I start weaning Small Baby – I wish they’d been around when Small Child was a baby! I will be ordering some more so that I can fill up my freezer with a nice stash of handy supplements to school lunches in the form of yoghurt and homemade smoothies, and I am very happy to highly recommend them.
