I was recently offered the opportunity to review a great looking product called the 'Cool Cap' which is made by an eco-friendly American company called GreenPaxx. Whilst I liked the look of the product, I must admit I wasn't sure how much use it would get, but I decided to give it a fair trial anyway, as the eco-friendly aspect appealed to me. I'm pleased to say that I'm very glad I did, as the Cool Cap has become something that we can't live without - it's now in daily use in our house!
First of all, I'll explain what it is. The 'Cool Cap' is a one size fits all silicone cap, designed to fit almost any cup or glass. It creates a spill-proof cup from any drinking vessel you may have around the house and, paired with the reusable silicone 'Cool Straws' made by the same company, is perfect for drinks at home or on the go. It is made from 100% non-toxic food-grade silicone, and allows you to ditch plastic drinking straws and sippy cups, thus reducing wasted materials from disposable plastic products that would otherwise end up in land-fill, and also avoiding any hidden toxins in the plastics. As you can see below, the underside of the cap has different sized rings built into it, allowing the cap to be stretched over a variety of different sized cups.
After reading a bit about it, I was eager to try it for myself. We have had many beakers with in-built straws over the years, which had each been chewed into oblivion by my lovely Small Child, who had recently turned to disposable straws instead - not very eco friendly! He has also recently taken to using 'grown-up' glasses and cups, which is fair enough considering that he has now reached the ripe old age of six, but unfortunately he seems to have inherited some of his mother's accident prone genes, which has meant many a spillage!
When the caps arrived, Small Child couldn't wait to try them. So much so that he insisted on bringing them along with us as we were off to visit my parents for the weekend. This was a promising start, as I didn't want him to be put off by thinking he was taking a step backwards to baby cups! In actual fact, though the design of both caps and straws is bright and cheerful (and available in both pink and blue), there is nothing babyish about them, they would be perfect for adults as well as children.
First impressions from Small Child were most definitely positive, and he hasn't had a drink at home without a Cool Cap on ever since! He really loves them, and also enjoys playing with the straws - he likes to clip them all together to make one super long one! In terms of endurance, they straws still look brand new, with not a tooth mark to be seen. We've been using them for several months now, so that's impressive!
I was a little unsure about cleaning the straws, but found this really useful information on the GreenPaxx website:
GreenPaxx Cool Straws are made from non toxic food grade silicone, a naturally non stick material that repels debris, making them super easy to clean. In case you forget to rinse them immediately after use, just run them under warm soapy water while kneading the length of the straw and any stuck on food should easily rinse off. No pipe cleaners required! They are dishwasher safe but hand washing is recommended to prolong the life of the products.
They have indeed proved to be very easy to clean, and in case I haven't already made it obvious, the straws come apart - the blue piece easily unclips from the green for even easier cleaning. The design of the straw is really clever - it clicks together and comes apart easily, yet is firmly held together with no cracks or danger of leaking when in use. Another great feature of the straw is that it is wider than standard straws, which makes it perfect for thicker drinks like milkshakes and smoothies, as well as our usual water, milk or fruit juice. Because they are so easy to clean, I'm perfectly happy to use them for milk-based drinks, which has never been the case with any other reusable straw.
The Cool Caps and Cool Straws were actually originally designed for smoothies and the like, so I'll share a quick recipe for a healthy smoothie with you. I do love a homemade smoothie - as well as the great taste, I also love the flexibility of them, how you can chuck in whatever ingredients you have to hand at the time to make a healthy drink that feels like a real treat. This particular recipe came about after I raided my cupboards in search of something sweet, and ended up with a delicious healthy smoothie instead of chocolate to satisfy my sugar cravings!
Store Cupboard Peach and Coconut Smoothie
Ingredients (serves 2):
1 400g Tin Peaches in Juice
75g Dried Apricots
1 400ml Tin Coconut Milk
4 or 5 Ice Cubes
If you get the chance to plan ahead, pop the unopened tins in the fridge overnight to chill.
Roughly chop the dried apricots and throw them into a blender. Whizz until finely chopped. Add the rest of the ingredients, and whizz together until combined and smooth.
Best served immediately. If not using straight away, pour into glasses, cover with cool caps and place in the fridge to keep fresh. When you're ready for them, pop a Cool Straw in the top and enjoy!
Going back to talking about the Cool Caps, I should note that Small Child isn't the only one who is enjoying them - they've solved a problem that has been worrying me for a while now - the risk of an inevitable laptop drowning! As I mentioned ealier, I'm pretty accident prone, and have been paranoid about having drinks around when working. That worry is a thing of the past now, I can stay hydrated without fear of a drastic spillage around my laptop!
Another unexpected benefit has been the facilitating of hands-free drinking - I managed to snap this picture of the Cool Cap in action while Small Child was cooking recently! He's been drinking so much more water since we got them, as he loves the fact that he is able to use any of our cups or glasses around the house and garden.
The Cool Cap and reusable Cool Straws are now available here through Amazon UK. Both the caps and the straws are available in pink and blue, the caps coming in a pack of two, and the straws in a pack of four. I am very happy to highly recommend both products, because they are eco-friendly, brilliantly designed and very useful. The straws work as a stand-alone product without the caps of course, as the ideal eco-friendly replacement for disposable ones. As you can hopefully tell, I am extremely impressed, both with the products themselves and the earth-friendly mission of GreenPaxx who make them.
