Are you looking for alternatives to sweets and chocolate to give out to trick or treaters at Halloween? Perhaps you've heard of the Teal Pumpkin project and are looking for allergy friendly or non-food trick or treat gifts to share? Well you've come to the right place, I've put together this fun resource of 10 alternative ideas for trick or treaters this year. Most of the ideas are sugar-free or non-edible gift ideas with a few healthier treats mixed too.
I've talked here on the blog before about how we trick-or-treating is a relatively new tradition in our household. Halloween doesn't have quite the same holiday status here in the UK as it does in the US, but trick-or-treating is becoming more popular every year here and we've found that it can actually be a lovely way to connect with the people who live around us in our local community.
One of the things that always made me feel uncomfortable about trick-or-treating was the 'asking for stuff' aspect of it, so we decided from the start to really concentrate on the giving side and make a bit of extra effort with our trick-or-treat offerings. I spend some time with my children in the run-up to Halloween putting together a selection of fun trick-or-treat gifts, it's makes a lovely little project to do together and helps them to focus on how they can make others happy by giving as well as enjoying receiving things themselves.
Here are my 10 alternative trick-or-treat ideas, I hope you find them useful!
1. Glow sticks make fantastic wizards wands, with the added bonus that parents will be able to more easily keep track of their children when they're out trick or treating in the dark! I found packs of 20 glow sticks for £1 in our local pound shop or you can buy them cheaper in packs of 100 from Amazon UK, so they're cost effective too.
2. Turn raisin boxes into ghosts for a healthy treat that will make kids smile! This fun edible craft is a great one to make with your kids earlier in the day to get them in the mood for trick or treating. You can see my quick video tutorial for these here.
3. Bouncy balls are always enjoyed by my children and these awesome eyeball ones I found in our local pound shop are perfect for Halloween!
If you can't find any eyeballs, just label up plain bouncy balls as 'Spiders Eggs' as a creepy twist for Halloween!
4. Talking of creepy crawlies, have a little fun by giving out plastic bugs and spiders instead of chocolates. You can find them all over the place at this time of year, try the Halloween section of your local supermarket, a pound shop or your local toy shop. There are loads of plastic spiders and bugs available online too.
5. If you want to go really healthy, clementine 'pumpkins' are fun to make! They're so quick and easy, all you need is a bag of clementines, a sharpie marker pen and some imagination!
6. You can't go wrong with fun novelty erasers as an alternative gift - I found these sets of bug and dinosaur themed rubbers in our local pound shop - 12 for £1! You may be able to find Halloween themed erasers at this time of year too, but any shape would make a fun little gift.
7. If you want something gross to make the children laugh, why not label up some yogurt covered raisins as 'Ghost Bogies'? This fun treat always goes down well with my boys! You can download your free printable labels for these here.
8. I found these awesome Halloween themed bubbles in our pound shop (it's been amazing for Halloween stuff this year!) but any little tubs of bubbles would make a fun little gift. Try decorating plain bubble pots with googly eyes to turn them into instant monsters!
9. Dressing up is one of our favourite Halloween traditions and pirate eye patches make a fun gift to go with the tradition! Look for multi-packs of eye patches in the party section of your local supermarket or pound shop or find them online.
10. For a really great budget option, buy a pack of foam stickers to give out. My little ones love a sticker to pop on their top, it never seems to get old! Hunt them down in your local craft shop, supermarket, pound shop or find them online.
To mix it up a bit, why not pick a few of the options and throw them into a bowl for a fun spooky dip! We like to offer a bowl of non-food gifts in case a child with allergies stops by and have a separate bowl for the fun food options.

I'm loving these ideas - and it's so great to see things that aren't sugar laden as they get enough sweets during trick or treating!
We do the Clementine Pumpkins and it's amazing how drawing on an orange can make them so much more appealing!
Some lovely ideas here. Thanks for sharing

Hi love the post. Thanks. I was lazy this year and just did sweets but last year i found some spooky temporary tatoos that went down really well. Even the older kids thought they were cool. Thanks for more ideas. I'm inspired for next year.

Thank you so much for the inspiration. Every year we decorate the house and I dress up and deliver a big bag of novelties and sweets to all the children in our street. The "wicked witch" never fails to amuse the children and adults alike!
You have given me even more ideas for this year!
