Looking for an easy Halloween recipe to make with the kids? They don't get much easier than these fun Swamp Monster Giant Chocolate Buttons.
These tasty treats are perfect for Halloween party food or party favours, or you could just make them for a fun spooky treat the kids will love any time of year!
Sometimes a recipe or fun food idea comes about completely by accident - that was certainly the case with these monster chocolate buttons! I was attempting to colour some chocolate green when recipe testing my Halloween Popcorn, but after accidentally using the wrong kind of food colouring my chocolate started to seize up and I had to abandon the attempt.
Never one to waste food, I grabbed some silicone cups to mould the leftover chocolate into buttons (in the style of my giant chocolate jazzies or sweet chocolate mendiants) and once the chocolate was decanted I thought they were just crying out for a scattering of candy eyes, and so my swamp monster giant chocolate buttons were born!
Swamp Monster Giant Chocolate Buttons
Ingredients (makes 12):
- 200g white chocolate
- green paste or gel food colouring
- edible candy eyeballs
Method:
Lay out 12 silicon muffin cases on a tray or plate.
Break up the white chocolate and place it in a microwave safe bowl.
Melt the chocolate in the microwave in 30 second bursts, stirring between each one to ensure it melts evenly. Be careful not to overheat or burn the chocolate, heat only until just melted and smooth.
Add some food colouring. The chocolate may start to seize up depending on the brand of colouring, if so, don't add any more, just stir in and work quickly!
Drop a spoonful of the chocolate into each of the prepared silicon muffin cases. Smooth it down with the back of the spoon so that it fills the whole base of the muffin case. Don't worry if it gets up the sides, any messy bits can be broken off once the chocolate has set.
Add a few candy eyes to each muffin case, pressing them gently into the top of the chocolate.
Place the the tray or plate in the fridge until the chocolate is cold and set.
Remove from the fridge and pop the buttons out of the mould.
Store in an airtight container somewhere fairly cool until ready to serve.
Note: Other food colours would also work well - try orange, purple or red for Halloween!
Enjoy!
