It's been far too long since I shared any of my fun bento lunches here on the blog, so here's a cute and easy owl sandwich and bento lunch! This lunch was made at Small Child's request a while ago, when he was studying owls as part of a school topic. Though it looks fairly fancy, this was a really simple lunch to make - a quick fun sandwich with simple sides decorated with bento food picks.
In this lunch Small Child had his owl sandwich (more details below), which was filled with German sausage slices on seeded brown bread. On the side he had sliced fresh strawberries and fresh blueberries, topped with alphabet bento picks spelling out 'Wise Owl' and a mini cucumber and mini pepper, both sliced then decorated with star bento picks. I finished the lunch off with some dried coconut strips in the little treat section of the lunch box. This lunch was packed in our blue Yumbox Panino bento box.
Here's a close look at the owl sandwich. To make it, I first made up the plain sandwich. I then cut off the crusts on two of the sides to make a rectangle and used a circle cutter to take out a semi-circle of sandwich to form the head shape. I decorated the top of the sandwich with a slice of German sausage, a mini Babybel cheese, which I removed from the wax and split in half with the aid of a sharp knife, a piece of carrot for the beak and a couple of slices of mini pepperoni, which I dotted with an edible marker pen to complete the eyes. I stuck everything in place with a little cream cheese for an edible 'glue'.
Small Child absolutely loved this owl lunch, and I was very pleased to have managed to come up with something to fulfill his request at very short notice!

This is a super cute lunch. You are so inspiring. I have bought a Yum box but I've never used it for school lunches as I need a bag to carry it in which is an upright carrier instead of having a handle on the side. I don't want my little one's pretty lunch ending up all in a pile. Can you suggest anything? Thanks xx
