I'm finally starting to catch up on myself, and even managing a blog post or two, so I thought it was about time I made it into 2014! I had totally got out of the lunch making groove over the holidays, and was somewhat shocked by the arrival of the first day of term (where did the holidays go?!) so the first lunch of the year was pretty simple, and made up of an assortment taken from whatever I could find in the cupboards!
In this lunch Small Child had some crackers and oatcakes, decorated with the numbers '2014' to celebrate the start of the new year. On the side he had a mini Babybel cheese, decorated with a leaf pick to look like an apple, and with an 'A' for apple cut from the wax to decorate. He also had some slices of cucumber, decorated with a crayon pick, a boiled egg, shaped into a star using an egg mould, a frozen organic yoghurt tube and an apple, decorated with alphabet picks spelling out 'HAPPY NEW YEAR'.
Here's a close up of the crackers and oatcakes, which I decorated with gel food colourings, painted on with a paintbrush. They came out quite dark - I would probably water down the gel a little next time I want to use them in this way.
Small Child ate everything in his lunch box - a good start to the new year!
