As Valentines Day fast approaches I’ve got another Valentines fun food idea to share with you – cute and easy apple love bugs! I’ve put a Valentines spin on my original apple ladybugs and I’m really pleased with how they came out. There was much oohing and ahhing over them from my boys but they didn’t survive long – they love their apples too much!

These apple love bugs make a perfect Valentines Day treat – you could pop them in a lunch box, serve them up as a healthy dessert or just have them as a fun snack. They’re fun to make with the kids too – they’ll enjoy punching out the heart shaped spots or let the come up with their own designs – you’ll find some more ideas here: Apple Bugs Tutorial.
You could also make them in bulk and serve them up for a fun healthy party food idea all the year around – they’d be perfect for all sorts of party themes; garden themed party, ugly bug ball or a mini beast party to name a few!
Valentines Apple Love Bugs
Ingredients (makes 4):
- 1 red apple
- 1 green apple
- 1 Tbs lemon or orange juice
- 4 black grapes
- 8 edible candy eyes
- tube of writing icing or cream cheese
Slice each apple in half. Use the corer or the small circle cutter to cut out the stalk – this will also leave a space for the grape head to slot into. Brush the cut sides with the lemon or orange juice to prevent browning.
Lay each apple half cut-side down on a chopping board. With your knife, score a long, thin triangle into one each apple half. Use the tip of your knife to remove the skin, then trim the apple flesh to tidy it up if necessary.
Push the mini heart cutter into the skin to make heart shaped ‘spots’ on each apple. Using the tip of a sharp knife, carefully pop the heart shaped pieces of skin out and place to one side. Brush juice over the apples again.
Place contrasting colours of the heart shaped skin back into each apple; green into the red apple and red into the green apple.
Push a grape into the top of each apple to make the head.
Using the writing icing or a dab of cream cheese, secure two edible candy eyes onto each grape head to complete each bug.
Dab each bug gently with a piece of kitchen paper to soak up any remaining juice and serve immediately.
For fun presentation, you could serve them up on a bed of dried fruit ‘dirt’!
Happy Valentines Day!
