Small Child recently requested another alien themed lunch, after the ‘Aliens in Underpants’ lunch went down so well with him. I wasn’t feeling at my most creative that day, but was struck by sudden inspiration after I spent the day clearing out the toy cupboard the day before – I’d gone through Small Child’s play-dough box and found a whole set of monster ‘features’ that are designed to be attached to play-dough to make funny creatures, which I thought might pass for aliens. I cut a couple of pieces of bread into shape using a circle cutter, filled them to make a sandwich, and let Small Child loose with the monster features (after thoroughly washing them in hot soapy water). Unfortunately he didn’t agree that they made good aliens, but was happy to compromise with a monster themed lunch instead. Whilst he was decorating the sandwich, I cut the veggies into monster feet and hands, then we put our joint effort lunch together!
In this lunch Small Child had a monster sandwich, filled with roast chicken, lettuce and a little light mayo, and decorated by Small Child with the plastic monster features. He also had some cucumber ‘monster feet’, carrot ‘monster hands’ and a ‘monster Babybel’ sitting on a pile of salt & pepper pretzel sticks. Small Child came up with the great idea of decorating the Babybel with the plastic monster eyes!
By the time we’d finished putting the main part of the lunch together, it was 8.30 and we should have been ready to leave for school 5 minutes earlier. This meant that dessert was the quickest I’ve ever made! I cut a kiwi in half with the zig-zag cut, ready for Small Child to break open and eat with a spoon, added some tiny cucumber eyes and some monster feet, then threw some organic vanilla yoghurt into a tub, added a couple of raisin eyes and sprinkled raisins either side of the pot.
With that, lunch was done, shoes and coat were chucked on and we managed the dash to school in record time; we weren’t even late. It was worth the rush though, we had loads of fun making this monster lunch together!
